With well over 300 vans built, 90% of them for families we have found what works and what doesn't maximizing ROI functionality. All of our vans are truly modular transforming in just a few minutes from a Passenger van, to a Campervan, or a cargo van.

Most truly complete builds today are $50-100k + the cost of the van, putting the total costs easily $125K-200k or more! Sourcing a reasonable priced van is a challenge as well especially with crash tested DOT approved seating. Our goal is to build vans that are 20-50% less, but with 80-90% of the same function as a higher priced build. This van is no exception, it might look simple but it does everything, built right, and easily upgradable as needs change. This particular build is about $36k; ~ 70 hours shop time at our speed.

THE VAN

Knowing fuel types are changing due to environmental laws/concerns we started with a 144" Sprinter AWD Crew van, one owner, low mile 2025 that can take biodiesel (B20) and regular diesel future proofing its use. This size can park anywhere and the crew comes with DOT approved seating and the mods that come with that like a crash bar in the sliding door. (this is not on a cargo van) The year and miles insure its under warranty, the previous owner had regular maintenance done, and the van was exceptionally clean and very well equipped. Very difficult to find vans like this, we actually had to grab it in a few hours to get it, but because its used it will save almost $10k vs new. Crew trim also includes most of the interior, flooring, seats, and a some windows as well...cargo's do not and end up costing way more to build.

THE BUILD

Unlike most vans you see, we are not going to focus adding on external "eye" candy to make the van look super built...but not making the van functional. We focus on functionality to actually transform the function of the van. (roof rack, tire carriers, fancy wheels, lights) You can do all the landscaping and paint you want on a home, but if you don't focus on the inside of the van...the house is still useless.

VENTED WINDOWS- A MUST HAVE

Its hot outside, you need cool are inside; so adding a fan, you can move the hot air outside, but not with out a vented/screened windows! We added full size OEM look rear vented window flowing cool air across your bed in back to keep you cool. This is a mod that many skip...and its very expensive to do, and many vans cut this super important mod. We like to do 4 windows typically but on this build to keep costs down we did two, you can swap out front windows later easily if one desires.

INSULATION AND SOUND DEADENING- ANOTHER MUST HAVE

This is a step that gets skipped a lot, is done poorly, not extensively, or halfway at best. We only use the best products; 3M Thisulate and Dynamat Extreme for sound deadening. We do both...its a HUGE difference. We put it everywhere...including the doors. We as well insulate the floor as well in this build. We don't use products with Tar (most do). We have an entire article on this; we do this next level and you can tell when you drive our vans. They are WAY quieter, cooler, and warmer than most all other vans.

INSULATON AND SOUND DEADENING

THE NO COMPROMISE BED for a van w/o a Pop Top

You want a bed that is height adjustable, easy to remove, rattle free, and super light? The Adventure Wagon MOAB bed is best in the market...but its expensive but worth paying a bit more for sure. Its actually fits a full size adult well over 6 feet. Many builds the bed is VERY short you just can't tell in the social media photos, its why no one is actually on the bed. Its tiny! They just put some fancy pillows to make it cute. Not only is this bed full size, we put an Ultra Comfortable 3 panel mattress on it as well custom made. This bed also allows you to use two rows of bench seats (when seating 8) and give you the configuration flexibility needed in both length and height to do this very easily.

AUX POWER-run all the basics

You need to power a fridge, charge your phones, use a laptop and maybe a heater? To maximize space in the van for gear, we use a simple DC only system and put it in the hood. This separates the power system from your starter battery...so you don't drain your starter battery. We do more complicated (and costly) power systems all the time, but 95% of people who use campervans don't have the need to run a cooktop, expresso machine, or charge your bike batteries...this is a great solution and with solar and alternator charging...more than enough power.

This build we will use a 200w Renogy Shawdow flux panel (anti-shade technology) and of course ad a fan on top for ventilation (Pro-Breeze) You can see the install is no hole mounting on the solar panels...clean and tidy, no shortcuts.

THE INTERIOR- MODULAR, FUNCTIONAL; TONS OF STORAGE

The interior is ultra modular, everything removes in minutes, the cabinets are huge, ultra light weight, remove quickly enabling you to reconfigure as needed. Front Dinette gives you a seating are keep the space under bed for storage. LED lighting as well.

Dual tracks allow for another bench seat enabling you to seat up to 8. Marine grade interwoven vinyl flooring is tough, easy to clean, and is padded. It also helps with insulation and sound deadening greatly. (the type we use, not the cheap stuff)

OUTSIDE SHOWER

We put water tank under the van to give you more room inside the van, a shower provides water to rinse off or for dishes and cleaning. You can ad hot water option as well very easily, we have an entire blog on that.

TIRE UPGRADE

You have to modify van to fit larger tires, we use the stock rims to save money...but larger tire gives you the functionality of those fancy wheels but with out the price. Makes the van look great as well!

This is why we keep the van as open inside as possible...you got gear! Our vans are based on REAL functionality...no gimmicks, no tricks in our pics. We figure out what really works.

How to reduce a build like this for less? Other builds...why are they cheaper...details matter, often times things are missing in the build and they can really ad up. Just by changing a build costs greatly change. For example:
