2026 AWD Family Pop Top V2 -Sleep 4+/Seat up to 8
Vans like this cost close to $200k + easily. How do you build a van that has 90% of the functionality for less. We built in previous blog one with a Van Speed Capsule so you can sleep sideways in back, by building one just by changing the bed we can save a few thousand dollars keeping the rear bed simple. Here is that build example.
You like the Outside Van Overnight Pop Top https://outsidevan.com/overnight/
However STARTING at $235k...it's a bit rich $$$? We have a different approach - getting the van under $150k...with similar functionality.
First and Foremost START WITH A CREW TRIM VAN, crash tested DOT seating is expensive! Crew vans include 75% of the interior, have a floor, and most importantly rear movable/removable bench seat. DO NOT START WITH A CARGO VAN, its NOT cheaper. Its seems that way but it isn't unless you are going to build a high end van build...(that is how you get to $200k)
Phase 1 lower build, we added rear windows for ventilation, instead of 4 we did 2 in the rear by the bed. Upgrade the tires/spare for better off road/snow performance (larger size), added side steps for ease of entry. These vans are tall. How did we save- did not go to fancy wheels- they look great but there is no performance advantage, put 2 vented windows in rather than capsules or additional windows. The two front side windows are easily upgraded later for more ventilation if wanted.

INTERIOR - Keep the choices smart, smart and simple keep costs down. We build modular interior that changes when your needs change. Campervan, cargovan, or passenger van. The van changes as your needs change daily. The van does not have to just sit in your driveway like an RV.

Still want a shower, want to maximize storage inside the van for gear rather than a large water tank? We put it outside and the water tank under the van not inside. Hot water option is easily added on as well. Use a curtain with your rear doors for privacy. An inside shower is one of the biggest regrets that owners of high end custom vans say they would not repeat again. They almost never use them and you have to deal with gray water storage and limited water supply.

Yes, a pop top with INSIDE entry will be added on this van. We like the Super Pacific Cloud Cap Pop Top for budgeting purposes. Its a great top, priced reasonably, and upgradable. You can't put an AC unit on it, but it can be insulated and a fan can be installed in it.

POWER- one of the more complex and expensive upgrades in any campervan build. We start with a mid range system that is expandable. Not taking any short cuts it starts with a high end Lithium heated 230ah battery (expandable to 460ah) and charged by the alternator and 400W of solar. A Red Arch DC to DC charger handles the charging duties to the battery. We put it in a small box- to give you more room to store your gear or sleep more than 4 adults in the van! Their is even space to add an inverter in the future!

Keeping the van warm and cool. A fan in the Pop Top pulls the hot air out and cool air in from the outside. An Espar Heater heats up the van in cool/wet conditions. The van is fully insulated AND sound deading- a step a lot of vans skip. All of the walls, doors, floor are insulated in the van. There is even an insulation kit for the Pop Top that can be purchased.
Example of Espar Gas heater under passenger seat and easy access electrical DC Panel

Small details like upgrade flooring and adding rear speakers into the factory head unit are added creature comforts. Stock lighting from factory is maintained as well as LED lighting running of the house battery is installed.
example of insulation- we have an entire blog on this https://www.cacampervan.com/post/insulation-and-sound-deadening
